How much layover time do you need to leave the airport?
There is no universal safe number. A four-hour domestic connection at a small airport is different from a six-hour international arrival that requires immigration, bag collection, a terminal train, and another security line. Use the estimate as a filter, then verify the actual airport layout and current entry rules.
The no-drama rule
If the result leaves less than two usable hours, staying at the airport is usually the calmer move. If it leaves two to four hours, choose one close, low-risk stop. If it leaves more than four hours, a compact city plan may be realistic—provided the return route is predictable.

Does a layover include boarding time?
The scheduled layover runs from arrival to departure, but you should not treat every minute as usable. Boarding may close before departure, and the arriving flight can take time to reach the gate and unload.
Can I leave the airport on an international layover?
Sometimes. You may need permission to enter the country, immigration processing, customs, and another security check. Verify rules for your passport and itinerary before leaving the secure area.
What if my flights use different tickets?
Use a much larger buffer. Separate tickets can mean collecting bags, rechecking, changing terminals, and having less protection if the first flight is late.
